BRUERTON. – The family of the late W. T. Bruerton thank relatives and friends for letters of sympathy and flowers in their recent bereavement. They would also like to thank Mr and Mrs A. Dunbar and Chums of the Old Contemptibles for their help, and Mr Spencer of the Co-operative Society Ltd., for efficient funeral arrangements.

FUNERAL OF ‘OLD CONTEMPTIBLE’

Funeral service of one of Gainsborough’s few surviving Old Contemptibles, Mr William Thomas Bruerton, was conducted at the John Robinson Memorial Congregational Church on Wednesday (week) by the Rev. Rex Oldham.

During the service, Mrs H. Horsley, at the organ, accompanied the singing of Mr Bruerton’s favourite hymn “By Cool Siloam.” Interment followed in the General Cemetery.

Mr Bruerton, a retired joiner, was aged 72 years, and died at his home in South Parade, Gainsborough.

He was a member of the Old Contemptibles’ Association and attended the Mons Veterans’ 50th anniversary rally in London last year.

A keen musician, Mr Bruerton was a member of the Britannia Works Band for 25 years.

Family mourners were: Mr A. Bruerton (son); Mrs B. Blackaby and Mr and Mrs W. J. Price (son-in-law and daughters); Mrs A. Ingall and Mrs F. Cowley (sisters); Miss V. Price, Miss L. Blackaby and Miss M. Blackaby (grandchildren); Mr and Mrs H. Balderson and Miss J. Balderson (brother-in-law and sisters-in-law); Mrs F. Atkin and Mr A. Atkin (nephew and niece).

Others present included: Chums G. W. Hammond (Secretary), C. W. Lamb (Vice-Chairman) and H. Ashton (Lincoln Branch of the Old Contemptibles);; Chum H. Manning and Chum Jones (Gainsborough Old Contemptibles); Mr H. Nuttall (representing Britannia Works Band); Mr A. Dunbar.
