Aldershot News, Military Gazette, Farnborough Chronicle, Fleet Times and Odiham Observer -12 June 1964

ARGUS GETS:

2,500 CHUMS

“Chum” Paddy Smyth(e), Secretary of the Aldershot Branch of the Old Contemptibles’ Association, tells me that preparations are well advanced for the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Mons.

He expects 2,500 men, some from Australia, South Africa, Canada and the United States, to be present for a gathering in the garden of Buckingham Palace on June 26 when this large contingent will be reviewed by the Duke of Gloucester, who will also take the salute.

On the following day there will be a pageant in the Albert Hall in which 230 performers will take part, 75 of them from Aldershot and the choir of All Saints’ Royal Garrison Church. He expects that there will be nearly 3,000 present.

Many of the Old Contemptibles from overseas have expressed their intentions to stay on until August to take part in Aldershot’s ceremonial parade at the Royal Garrison Church.
